I’m Nathan Schoenmaker and I'm an auditor at Pitcher Partners based in Brisbane, Australia, having commenced as a graduate at the start of 2020. In my role as an intermediate auditor, I am very much involved in the fieldwork for a range of different audits within our firm’s client portfolio, from public interest entities, private proprietaries, and not-for-profits across a wide range of industries. In this age of big data and automation, I’m always looking for ways to improve the efficiency of my work to provide deeper value for our clients.
The biggest change to the audit landscape I’ve encountered in my career was the onset of the pandemic during my graduate year. Subsequent lockdowns and work-from-home measures severely impacted one of the most fundamental aspects of an audit, communication with the client and collaboration within the audit team.
Advancements and implementation of technology have significantly helped in bridging the gap however as is the case with remote working, greater effort is required to stay engaged with the client and team.
Pitcher Partners rolled out DataSnipper at the end of last year and since its implementation, I’ve been able to utilize the automation. It provides across a large portion of my everyday fieldwork including tests of detail, controls testing, walkthroughs, and various other audit procedures.
This efficiency has freed up time that is now spent with clients getting a deeper understanding of their business and the key audit areas as well as increased capacity to collaborate and engage with the audit team.
